Building Trust in an AI-Driven World
AI Made Information Cheap.
Trust Just Got Expensive.
A recent LinkedIn research report on AI and B2B buying got us thinking — the same shift is happening in recruiting. Information is everywhere. Trust is the thing that's actually scarce now.
A few days ago, I was reading LinkedIn's latest research on how AI is reshaping B2B buying. On the surface, it's a sales report.
But the more I read it, the more I realized it applies just as much to recruiting.
One idea kept sticking with me: information isn't scarce anymore. Trust is.
Information isn't scarce anymore. Trust is.
Everyone Has Already Done the Research Before You Ever Speak
Think about how candidates evaluate opportunities today. Before they ever speak with a recruiter, they've already researched the company, compared compensation, read employee reviews, looked through leadership profiles, and probably asked ChatGPT what questions to expect during the interview. In many cases, they've already formed an opinion before anyone from the company reaches out.
Hiring leaders aren't any different. Before scheduling a conversation with a recruiting partner, they're looking at LinkedIn profiles, reviewing testimonials, comparing firms, and deciding who appears to understand their business — not just who can fill a role.
Whether you're hiring executives, selling software, raising capital, or building strategic partnerships, AI is changing how people gather information. It isn't changing why they choose one person over another.
Candidates arrive informed
Compensation research, employee reviews, and AI prepped interview questions all happen before a recruiter ever picks up the phone.
Hiring leaders arrive skeptical
Profiles, testimonials, and competing firms are compared long before the first call — they're deciding who understands their business, not just who can fill a role.
AI changes the how
Sourcing, research, and outreach all move faster now. But the reasons people choose one partner over another haven't changed.
AI Can Summarize. It Can't Advise.
LinkedIn's research found that while AI is becoming part of nearly every buying decision, expertise remains one of the strongest drivers of trust. That doesn't surprise us.
Because AI can summarize a compensation report. It can't help someone decide whether leaving an exceptional manager for a larger paycheck is actually the right career move.
AI can write an outreach message. It can't hear the hesitation in someone's voice when they're trying to balance ambition with uncertainty.
AI can compare résumés. It can't look a CEO in the eye and say, "I've interviewed hundreds of leaders over the years. Here's the strength, and here's the risk, that doesn't show up on paper."
That's judgment. And judgment is built through experience.
Technology should make us better advisors. Not replace the advisor.
Building a search that needs judgment, not just data?
We Use AI Every Day — As a Tool, Not a Replacement
Faster research and sharper sourcing still run through the same decade of relationships and judgment that make CEC searches different.
The Real Competitive Advantage Is Trust, Not Access
At Chris Edward Consulting, we use AI and technology every single day. We should. It helps us research markets faster, identify talent more efficiently, and stay informed in ways that simply weren't possible a few years ago. But technology should make us better advisors. Not replace the advisor. That's an important distinction.
The competitive advantage for firms, leaders, and professionals is shifting — less from what you know or the tools you use, and more from the transparency and trust you bring to the table. Because when the stakes are high, people aren't looking for more information. They're looking for confidence.
Trust reduces risk. Trust speeds up decisions. Trust gives people the confidence to make career moves, hiring decisions, investments, and partnerships they might not have made otherwise.
AI will absolutely continue to transform how we work — that's not the debate anymore. The real question is: as AI makes information easier for everyone to access, what are you doing that makes people trust you more than they did yesterday?
